Medu Vade

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 300 gms Urad dal
  • 1 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)
  • 3 Onions (finely chopped)
  • 3 Green chillies (finely chopped)
  • 2 tsp Rice flour
  • 500 ml Oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Soaking the Dal:

Take 300 gms of urad dal and rinse it well in water. Soak the dal in sufficient water for half an hour.

Grinding:

After soaking, drain the excess water. Add the soaked urad dal to a grinder. Grind until you get a smooth batter. Depending on the consistency you want and the type of grinder, you might need to add a little water while grinding. Do not add excess water as this can make the batter too runny.

Preparing the Batter:

Transfer the batter to a bowl. To this batter, add salt to taste. Then, add 1 tsp of hing, finely chopped onions, and green chillies.

Rice Flour Addition:

Add 2 tsp of rice flour to the batter and mix well. This helps in giving a crispy texture to the final dish.

Final Checks:

Check the salt. If required, you can add more according to your taste.

Heat 500 ml oil to fry. Make flattened balls and fry them once the oil is hot. Remove once golden brown.
Serve this with coconut chutney or Sambar.

Tips

In case you want to thicken the batter you can add 1 tbsp of white rave.
