Hibiscus Juice recipe

Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 cup hibiscus flowers (also known as sorrel or roselle)
  • 6.5 cups water
  • 1/2 to 1 cup sugar (or adjust to taste)
  • Optional additions: cinnamon stick, a few slices of ginger, or a splash of lime or orange juice for flavour

Instructions

Rinse the Flowers:

Place the dried hibiscus flowers in a sieve and rinse them under cold
water. This helps to remove any dust or impurities.

Boil:

Bring water to a boil in a pot. If you are adding optional flavours like cinnamon or ginger, you can add them now.

Steep the Flowers:

Add the rinsed hibiscus flowers to the pot once the water is boiling. Turn off the heat and steep the flowers for 15-20 minutes. The water will turn a deep red.

Strain:

After steeping, strain the liquid through a sieve into a pitcher or bowl to remove the flowers (and any other added spices). Press on the flowers with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.

Sweeten:

While the liquid is still warm, add sugar and stir until it’s dissolved. If you don’t want to use sugar, you can also use honey, stevia, or other sweetener. Adjust to taste.

Cool and Serve:

Let the hibiscus juice cool down. Once it’s at room temperature, you can refrigerate it to chill or serve it over ice. If desired, add a lime or orange juice splash right before serving.

Garnish:

When serving, add a slice of orange, lemon, or a sprig of mint for an added touch.

Health Benefits:

Hibiscus is believed to offer several health benefits:

  • It is rich in antioxidants.
  • It might help lower blood pressure.
  • It may boost liver health.
  • It can promote weight loss.

However, as with all-natural remedies and traditional drinks, it is essential to consume in moderation and be aware of any personal allergies or interactions with medications. Always consult a healthcare professional if you are considering hibiscus for its potential health benefits.
